POST AND CORE

Post and core is a procedure that is required to rebuild a tooth in order to provide proper support for a crown.

The post will act like an anchor for the placement of your crown.  Post are usually recommended when there is inadequate support for a crown.

Post and core materials used for build ups

The use of a post will be determined on an individual basis based upon support and structural requirements for you procedure.

  1. First of all, a post is a metal structure that is placed within the body of the root of a tooth that has had a previous root canal therapy.
  2. It can only be placed in a tooth that has had a root canal because the space previously occupied by the nerve is now filled.
  3. In placing your post, we remove some of this filling material making sure we leave the last two to three millimeters to seal the end of the root. This space that has been created is necessary in order to anchor the post within the root of the tooth.
  4. There are different types of posts. The type that is chosen for you will depend upon a number of factors. The post can either be: prefabricated or cast at the dental lab.
  5. The part of the post that shows is called the core.  It is upon this core or base that we can anchor a crown.  The post is cemented into your tooth separate for the crown.
  6. The crown is then ready to be placed.
  7. This procedure will help guarantee the wear life of your crown if you follow good crown home care.
