INSTRUCTIONS FOR HOME CARE FOLLOWING APICOECTOMY

You have just had surgery on the root of your tooth.

WHAT YOU SHOULD EXPECT

bulletOozing of blood for the first 24 hours
bulletSwelling and minor discomfort may be experienced.  If surgery was performed in the lower jaw, a tingling of the lower lip is possible due to stretching of the nerve supply in this area
bulletFacial discoloration may be present for up to 10 days following surgery.  This is a normal part of the healing process and will gradually disappear
bulletThe gums may recede, making your teeth look longer after surgery.  The gum tissue between the teeth will look different.  Even though healing occurs rapidly, gum re-contouring occurs over weeks to months

INSTRUCTION TO FOLLOW:

  1. After leaving our office, rest as much as possible for the next 24 hours.

  2. Avoid any strenuous activity for the next few days

  3. Do not skip any meals.  Drink plenty of fluids.  Avoid hot liquids and eat only soft bland foods (soups, eggs, milk, etc) for the next two days.  Avoid chewing in the operated area until the sutures are removed, and avoid hard or chewy foods for one week

  4. In order to keep swelling to a minimum, place an ice pack on the face over the operated area as recommended.  The ice should be used alternatively-20 minutes on, 20 minutes off, for 4-6 hours following surgery

  5. For pain take Ibuprofen, naproxsyn or ketoprofen (Motrin, Advil, Aleve) or other similar strength analgesics (Tylenol) for the next two days unless contraindicated by any of your medical conditions.  Take it and/or additionally prescribed pain medication as directed

  6. Do not lift your lip to examine the surgical area, you may tear the stitches

  7. Maintain good oral hygiene.  Brush your teeth carefully after each meal, but avoid brushing the surgical area for two days.  At that time you may warm a tooth brush in hot water and gently clean the surgical area

  8. Starting tomorrow, use warm salt-water rinses (teaspoon of salt to a cup of water). Rinse 4-5 times a day for the next week. BreathRX may be used two times a day, but avoid mouth rinses containing alcohol.

It is important that you return for a post-operative visit within 5-7 days to remove the stitches and evaluate the healing.

Healing should be further evaluated at one month and within a year after the surgery.

Thus you need to make your next appointment in one month and we will send you a recare card for your one-year follow up appointment. There is no fee for these evaluation appointments and they are an important part of your care.
