Periodontal disease affects 3 out of 4 adults.

What is Soft Tissue Management?

    It is an individualized plan to eliminate infection of the gums and root surfaces.  Remember periodontal disease is an infectious and inflammatory disease  that results from bacteria collecting on the tooth surface above and below the gum line which destroys gum tissues and bone.

The greatest cause of adult tooth loss is gum disease.

    The procedure used is called Root Planing.  This treatment  is of the diseased root surfaces BELOW the gumline.  It focus on eliminating:

bulletTartar and plaque below the gum 
bulletDetoxifying the root surfaces where the disease occurs
bulletObtaining smooth roots 
bulletFlushing out the pockets allow for healthy reattachment of the gums to the root surfaces.
bulletThe goal is to decrease the biological burden oxygenate an anaerobic environment in order to stimulate antigen/antibody interaction giving a global response destratify the local ecosystem  to disrupt the biofilm by gross mechanical debridement of calculus stimulate stagnant capillary ends in order to decrease the toxin burden  and improve the self cleansing We are treating a multifactorial problem with a multifactorial treatment.
bulletIf you smoke. than stopping smoking will do more for your  refractory periodontal disease than any other form of therapy.

    The goals of this treatment are:

bulletGums that do not bleed.  HEALTHY GUMS DO NOT BLEED!
bulletFresher breath and taste
bulletReattachment of gum tissue to tooth surface
bulletSmooth tooth surface
bulletFlush out bacteria in pockets
bulletGums that are not red, swollen or tender
bulletKnowing how to effectively maintain good oral hygiene
bulletReduce pocket depths 
bulletControl periodontal disease

     What we need from you, our patient to make this treatment a success:

bulletCompletion of the therapy as prescribed 
bulletThoroughly cleaning all tooth surfaces two times a day
bulletFlossing daily
bulletMaintenance of regular recare visits
bulletWe will offer thorough instructions on home care to insure the removal of bacteria on a daily basis. This includes proper use of the toothbrush, paste, mouth rinses, medications, floss threaders, and proxy brushes. Home care can effectively eliminate the plaque above the gums and down to 2 mm below the gums.
